I was born in Washington State into a military family. We moved around quite a bit in the early years of my life. I spent a few of my childhood years in Yokohama Japan. Growing up, my family always believed in doing things together, which involved many camping trips, sporting events, and scouting adventures.
Church was never a large priority in the home because my father had said he had tried many churches in his youth and found mostly gossipers filling the pews. We tried a few, but never for any length of time. In my junior year of High School, I had a good friend that helped me start to understand who God really was. I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior and was baptized in 1984. Shortly following my baptism I was blessed with the opportunity to attend a college in Northern California, where I met Pam, my wife of 24 years. The Lord blessed my wife and I with (2) wonderful children. Tiffany who was born in 1987 and Devan who was born in 1989.
After graduating from college, I had the ambition to become a Registered Dietitian. However, plans changed quickly when the Dietitian I was planning to start my internship with lost her husband, who was the pilot of a PSA jet that was hijacked. With family growing, I quickly shifted gears and decided to follow in my father’s footsteps and pursue a career in Healthcare Administration in San Diego California. I spent the next 20 years as an Administrator, working closely with my father, mother and wife managing a large Skilled Nursing Facility, that my parents had part ownership in.
Throughout the early years, my wife and I raised our children we were pretty regular church goers, but as they began to grow older we found it more and more difficult to do both sports and church. As church took a backseat the children’s sports took over. The family became driven to make our kids the best at any sport they competed in. Success followed this drive with Tiffany becoming an All-Star Softball Pitcher, South San Diego County Runner of the Year, Junior Olympic National Race Walker, cheerleader, and dancer. Devan was just as successful, winning running events all over California, baseball player, football player, and one of the top youth wrestlers.
During our daughter’s junior year of High School, amongst all her successes, she surprisingly asked us if we could move because she was experiencing some problems at the school. Looking for a change in direction for our family, in February of 2004, we decided to move closer to one of my brothers Lyle and his family who had success at a school with their children in eastern San Diego County.
In 2004, we also joined a large Christian church in the San Diego area called the “Rock Church”. Little did I know that attending there would have a large impact on my life as a whole, both spiritually and physically.
A monumental shift began in 2006 that would impact the rest of my life. The family business was sold and it forced me to rethink my future as to how I might support my family. In April 2007, I was immensely blessed with the opportunity to work for large Christian Retirement Community as a Healthcare Administrator.
In October of 2007, large wildfires in the area forced both the evacuation of my home and workplace. In November of that same year the largest trial of my life occurred, the loss of Devan, our 18 year old son, in a car accident.
In June of 2009, Pam and I joined Thad and Melissa in the most rewarding experience of our lives the “All Need Christ” ministry. We have been going out twice a week together, sharing the gospel with the lost.
